Synopsis: With Splatoon, Nintendo aims for a less violent shooter experience by pitting up to eight gamers against one another in ink-slinging battles. Players take on the role of shape-shifting Inklings who, in their childlike form, can use a variety of weapons to splatter every available surface with colorful blobs of ink. They can then transform into squid-like creatures and use their ink to travel at faster speeds, hide, refill reservoirs, and even climb walls. Enemy ink is another story, however, as it significantly slows down humanoid Inklings, and causes damage to squids.


Each Inkling can carry primary and secondary weapons into battle, with primary weapons falling into the categories of long-range, mid-range, and messy, while secondary weapons like grenades and ink sprinklers add a bit of splash damage to the proceedings. If players spread enough ink they will have brief access to powerful special weapons like shields, bazookas, and rockets, and each character can get skill boosts by acquiring new outfits and accessories. Multiplayer modes include the online Turf War, a four-on-four battle to see which team can cover the largest area in ink in three minutes, and the local Battle Dojo, in which two gamers compete to pop the most balloons. Splatoon also includes the single-player Octo Valley mode, where Inklings explore levels, solve puzzles, and battle foes called Octarians. ~ Christopher Brown, All Game Guide
